After 40 years, the legal battle between King Sunny Ade and Record Manufacturing Company of Nigeria, African Songs and its subsidiary, Take Your Choice Stores, is over.
King Sunny dragged the two companies before Justice Dosunmu of the Lagos high court, in 1975, over his master tapes.
The court ordered the companies to return the master tapes of the original music works produced under the label of the two companies by Sunny Ade and his Green Spot Brand to him.
The CEO of the two companies, Chief Bolarinwa Abioro died before the master tape could be returned.
Sunny dragged the companies again in 1997 before a federal high court in Lagos.
According to TheNewsNigeria, a Federal high court sitting in Lagos, Nigeria, ordered the companies to pay the Afro Juju maestro the sum of N500 million as damages, for infringing on Sunny’s works with additional cost of N3 million for prosecuting the suit.
