The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has reportedly banned 5 Nigerian songs this week.
Olamide’s songs “Wo”, “Wavy Level”, Davido’s “Fall”, “If (Remix)” and 9ice’s 2016 hit Living Things are the song said to have been banned by the policy making body.
Olamide’s Wo had earlier been fingered by the Ministry of Health as being dangerous to public health and violates the Nigerian Tobacco Control Act 2015. 9ice Living Things is likely to have been banned as it glorifies fraudsters.
According to the indigenous rapper Olamide, he has no intention of promoting tobacco to get people killed with his music. The ban came after Federal Ministry of Health led by honourabe Minister Isaac Adewole said Olamide’s new street anthem ‘WO’ is in violation of Tobacco Control Act 2015.
According to the 2015 Tobacco Control Act, it is prohibited to promote or advertise tobacco or tobacco products except between a manufacturer, retailer and consenting persons above 18 years of age.
“No person shall promote or advertise tobacco or tobacco products in any form.
“No person shall engage or participate in any tobacco advertising, promotion or sponsorship as a media or event organizer, celebrity or other participant,” it read.
According to the 2015 law, anyone who violates the law faces the risk of a fine and jail term of not more than one year.
Person that produces or publishes advertising, promotion or sponsorship content shall attract a fine of not less than N3,000,000 and a term of imprisonment of not more than one year.
