Bella Alubo Lucid Dreaming EP (Review)

Rap is considered a men-only sport to engage in and rarely have women been easily accepted into the fold, but few have. And trust me, it is refreshing to hear women perspective on any given issue, and rap is no different.
Speaking of women doing rap I recently found an amazing new generation J-Town rap artist called Bella Alubo and her Lucid dreaming EP released on SoundCloud on the 15th December 2016.
I spoke about the new generation of SoundCloud artists coming with sounds formulated in the crevices of their mind. Insane beats with instrumentals mash-up off the charts, the samples, the presentation (album art, snapshots), and promotional wave on social media and Bella is no different, she actually puts in work to get her work out there.

Lucid Dreaming is an EP about the simple aspirations of an upcoming female rapper living in Nigeria. The first track on the EP is a song called “Myself” which explores Bella’s deepest fears and struggles in achieving her dreams as a rapper in Nigeria, it is followed by club type joints like “Alhaji” and “Flex” that equally blew my mind.

On “shell down” Bella Alubo uses a Reggae/dancehall approach to her rap which gave the song a groove-able vibe, I know everyone says rap is boring but Bella makes it enjoyable.  We hear of rappers rapping about the women in their lives and in the song that follows “Round 2” Bella raps about the men in her life and explores issues with her real-time relationships, her perspective is so relevant and welcomed. On “sister” Bella switches her rap flow and uses fluid vocals on an Afrobeat-infused beat, and then she finalised with a sensational spoken word poetry titled “3:16” which bordered on happenings in the world today. Very brilliant.

Lucid Dreaming is the Rapper’s 2nd EP, her first EP was BELLA: THE EP  and it features five songs as well, equally an enjoyable listen.

All songs were written by the rapper herself, Bella. The songs were recorded in Calabar and Jos, Nigeria. Producers featured include Syn X, Vicious Klint, Charlie X, and Beats Craze. I am already familiar with Charlie X who worked with Paybac but I noticed Syn X, Beats Craze and Klint make dope beats too. Fire.
