It’s been almost six years since the release of Wyclef Jean’s seventh solo album From the Hut, to the Projects, to the Mansion. Approaching the release of his next full-length record, Clefication, the former Fugees member sat down with Billboard for an interview and a performance of the first single off the project. First and foremost, Clef claimed that even though he has put out only a few tracks in the last years, he has been constantly working on new material, explaining musicians never really stop creating music.
“Musicians never stop doing music. Whether if I’m active in a music space for the charts or I’m just doing music, we never stop doing music,“Wyclef Jean tells Billboard.
He also shared that he has been in the studio working with the likes of DJ Khaled, Afrojack, Emeli Sand and Avicii on the LP. His collaboration with the latter, “Divine Sorrow,” already saw the light of day back in November 2014.
“The genesis of what I do is based off songwriting,” Jean explains. “I’m a songwriter first I love to be there with the guitar and piano. Someone who has the same hobby as me is Avicii. We got into the studio and just started to work on a bunch of music. ‘Divine Sorrow’ was one of the records recorded. The tone of it, the attitude, the emotion is… it’s been a minute since you heard that [from] me.”
