Grammys 2017: Adele Breaks Her Album Of The Year Award In Half to Honor Beyoncé

Adele won five Grammys on Sunday night, but one of her trophies didn’t make it out of the ceremony in one piece.

After Adele dedicated her Album of the Year acceptance speech to Beyoncé, the “Hello” singer broke her golden gramophone in two, leading some viewers to speculate that she was going to split the trophy with Queen Bey.

“I can’t possibly accept this award,” Adele said in her acceptance speech. “And I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful and gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyoncé and this album to me, the Lemonade album, was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul-baring, and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that. And all us artists here adore you. You are our light!”

The 25 artist, who also won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, told reporters backstage that when she heard her name called instead of Beyoncé’s, “a piece of me died inside.”

“I felt like it was her time to win,” she said, according to PEOPLE. “What the f— does she have to do to win Album of the Year?”

The sentiment was shared by many on Twitter, who rallied around Beyoncé and praised Adele for giving her credit.
