The 44-year-old rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested in New York City last month just before he was set to take the stage at Radio City Music Hall.
On Tuesday, DMX was sentenced to six months in jail for “violation of certain court orders or conditions of bond in a family violence case,” according to police, including not paying $400,000 worth of child support. He’s currently being held at Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo, New York.
The rapper’s lawyer did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
DMX, who is no stranger to run-ins with the law, has been arrested multiple times throughout the years. In 2004 he was famously taken into custody after allegedly attempting to steal a car at New York’s Kennedy Airport, and he was subsequently fined for several traffic violations.
And earlier this year, a New Jersey man accused the rapper of robbing him at gunpoint at a gas station. No charges have been filed in that case.
